Mantra! Guilty pleasure! Gotta love it for how many ideas they throw in, and for being this strong gender-bendy focus with the main character. It’s rarely great, and it’s heavily dated, but it’s just so full of Stuff! For good or ill, I really like it, though I do tend to think of it in terms of ‘what if’ and remember it in an idealized scope.

I feel in a different retelling we could really focus and explore Lucasz as a person is truly forced to completely be someone else. Not just female, which is important in being connected to their powers, but also having to change from warrior to wizard, and from being led to being a leader, from being a person from the past to the modern, a soldier to a family person… There’s a lot of conflict in figuring out where that line is, of who you are, who you can be, and what you choose defines you.
